Chapter Nine

“Gentlemen,” Kalista said. “Can I help you with anything?”

They were now all three wearing black drawstring sleeping pants, with their chests and abs completely bare.

Chest and abs. She said those words in her mind as if they were just a part of the human body. On them, the words were inconsequential. They were sculptured for power, potency, and virility. Muscles sloped like mountains across their bodies, and deep valleys curled between their eight-pack abs. Zero fat.

Her whole bizarre morning came crashing down on her. The truth was, she couldn’t get the image of their bodies out of her mind. She would be plagued by the sight of them. Her fingers would burn with the need to touch them as if she could.

Nope. Erase. Erase. Erase.

Good.

They were blocking her way out, and honestly, the idea of turning around and running in the other direction grew in appeal with every guilty breath she took.

She backed away slowly.

Instinct told her they knew what she had done.

Isaac divested her of the box she was holding, the two bags that hung from her shoulder, and a huge stainless-steel bowl she held in her other hand. He did so calmly, gently prying it out of her hands with such softness that she felt as if he had seduced her.

He did, you silly girl. He seduced you out of the stainless-steel bowl that Marcus was going to wear as a hat for the play.

Shit. Fuck even.

Were all her empty promises catching up with her?

“I actually have lots to do.”

“So, let’s get this straight,” Chance began. “You tried to drug us—”

“Not when you put it like that,” Kalista said, defeated. They were making it sound so horrible. Oh hell. It was horrible. She had done a terrible thing.

“How should we put it then?”

“But how did you know?”

“Do you know what we did before we started to sit behind desks in skyscraper buildings, managing billions of dollars?”

“No.” The internet was very secretive about them.

“We were specially trained military agents for the government. We know more ways to kill a man than there are strands of hair on that beautiful head of yours.”

Oh dear. Just as well, she didn’t get JT to knock them out. He might have met his match. Or worse, be killed. That was the one thing about them she experienced first: their dangerous power.

“We can detect a little valerian when we smell it, among other things, despite trying to mask it.”

Oh shit. She was swearing like a sailor now.

“Are you ready to come clean?” Trey asked.

She exhaled noisily, her shoulders drooping with her. It was game over for her. For Bloomings Tide: She carried the Chapman curse, and the TITS award was never going to be theirs.

“Well, it started off with me,” she exhaled again. “Getting the dates wrong. I thought it said eighteen, but it was fifteen. I thought if it were the eighteenth, we would have had three days to put everything together, but it turned out we had no days to put anything together when you arrived.
